Easy Crossing for U.S. Visitors

American visitors to Canada DO NOT need a passport to cross in either direction. Visitors may be asked to verify their citizenship and should therefore carry any one of the following documents: birth certificate, naturalization certificate, Green Card or passport. Photo identification is also required so visitors should carry their driver’s license or other photo ID with them.

Tourism Toronto is working with members of the tourism industry in both Canada and the U.S. to preserve the ease of travel for visitors. New rules are scheduled to come into force in 2007 and 2008 that will require visitors to present a passport or PASS card when crossing into the U.S. Beginning January 2007, travellers crossing the border by air or sea will require a passport or PASS card. For travellers crossing the border over land, the requirement takes effect in January 2008. Further details of the requirements are still being developed and Tourism Toronto will update visitors on new requirements when they are established.

For more information on efforts to help visitors cross Canada’s borders easily, visit the Tourism Industry Association of Canada.
