Seasons in Toronto

An all-weather destination

Situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is one of the southernmost cities in Canada. In fact, its latitude is very close to that of northern California. As a result, Toronto has a surprisingly moderate climate – with the warmest springs and summers in Canada.

Spring

Springtime in Toronto is a sight to behold as the bulbs and buds begin to bloom. This seems to energize the population – the first time the temperature rises into the high teens (high 60s), you’ll find us jostling for a seat on an outdoor patio.

What to pack: A light jacket and umbrella in case of fresh, rainy days.

Summer

Summers in Toronto can be quite warm and fairly humid. Midsummer temperatures range from 61-81 F/16-27 C, with quite a few days in the 90s F/32-35 C. As a result, the beaches, parks and patios are packed all summer long.

What to pack: Sunscreen. As for clothes, anything goes in the summer in Toronto – from shorts & sandals to jeans and sundresses – but take note: shirts & shoes are mandatory at most dining and retail establishments.

Fall

If you’ve never experienced Toronto in the Fall you’re in for a real treat. Autumn is the season for the turning of the leaves, and temperatures are usually quite pleasant with plenty of sunshine. It’s a wonderful time to stroll through the city exploring its many neighbourhoods, or to take a day trip.

What to pack: A light jacket and a sweater or two.

Winter

Torontonians are a hardy bunch, and a little snow doesn’t faze us. The city is alive with activities all winter long – from skating to skiing to countless holiday festivities. January temperatures range 18-31 F/-8 to -1 C.

What to pack: A warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves and lined boots.
