Yonge Street
It makes sense that the longest street in the world would have some of the city’s most eclectic shops.
The action starts jumping just past the Eaton Centre where the Yonge Street Strip starts. Here is Sam the Record Man’s musical superstore, plus bars, hip clothing outlets and slightly naughty lingerie boutiques.
North of Bloor Street, Yonge has a completely different feel. Fine food shops, designer stores and galleries all cluster together. If you like to wet your whistle every once in a while, the Summerhill liquor store is the spot. It has almost 5,000 different types of beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages spread throughout a former train station. Even further north is Yonge and Eglinton. Theatres, hip eateries and pubs compete with boutiques offering everything from the latest baby fashions to skate wear.
Major Event
Every July, Yonge Street comes alive during the Celebrate Toronto Street Festival. Five different locations play host to jugglers, fire-eaters, thrill shows and live music from a variety of genres. You can even buy a caricature of yourself from one of the local artists. The event is completely free and kicks off with a spectacular fireworks show.
