St. Lawrence and Corktown

Corktown is rich with history. The “Little Trinity Church,” built in 1843 by families who couldn’t afford pew rentals at nearby churches, still stands today on King Street. Just south stands the Trinity Schoolhouse, Toronto’s first “free school.” Today you can visit the school’s museum which houses a replica of a 19th-Century classroom.

The St. Lawrence neighbourhood is one of the most successful urban housing projects in the world. It is also home to the St. Lawrence Market, designated as a market area back in 1803. It’s currently ranked as one of the top 25 markets in the world, according to Food and Wine Magazine. The culinary specialties here span the globe. You’ll find everything from focaccia to chorizo, smoked salmon to rotis.

Major Event
Every July The St. Lawrence Market BBQ Cookoff/Craft Beer Show attracts contestants from across Canada and the United States to put their tastiest recipes to the test and compete for Best in Show.

Interesting Fact
Upper Canada’s first parliament buildings were on Parliament Street, but were burned down by American forces in 1813.
