Entertainment District

Walking along, the stars begin to appear.  Mike Myers. Jim Carrey. Celine Dion. Jacques Villeneuve. Their names and others are embedded in the sidewalk on Canada’s Walk of Fame in the heart of the Entertainment District.  Loosely bordered by Yonge Street, Spadina Avenue, Queen Street and Queen’s Quay, the area has everything from SkyDome to Massey Hall. Dress up for a show at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Or dress down and surf the crowd at the Horseshoe Tavern.

Major Event
The North By NorthEast Music Festival showcases the best of independent music from across the continent.  There are gentle solo acoustic sets and raucous performances by glam-metal bands, sometimes appearing on stage one after the other. Over a single weekend in June, hundreds of up-and-coming bands are showcased in the city’s bars and concert halls.

Interesting Fact
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres on Yonge Street, built in 1913, were restored and re-opened in 1989.  Decades of neglect were erased using bread dough. Hundreds of kilograms of it. The dough lifted dirt off the expansive wall murals, leaving the spectacular artwork undamaged. It’s still open today and is the world’s last  “double-decker” or stacked Edwardian theatre.
