Chinatown

A plethora of people, charming storefronts, and streets lined with both hustle and bustle create the character of Toronto’s captivating downtown Chinatown. This vibrant district houses some of Canada’s best oriental shops, fruit markets and most importantly…restaurants. There’s actually a wide representation of Asian cultures within Chinatown, as evidenced by the many Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants that draw crowds on a daily basis.

Chinatown prides itself on its authentic cuisine. Experience Peking Duck served in two courses at the Bright Pearl, or visit the Golden Leaf for fabulous Dim Sum that’s available even after its traditional morning/afternoon serving time. Look for the red cow on the sign of Pho Hung to find Toronto’s favourite destination for real Vietnamese beef pho. Some might prefer Lotus Garden, a completely vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant where local Buddhist monks dine alongside tourists and area residents. Or just wander through the neighbourhood and peek through restaurant windows until you come across your perfect atmosphere.

Elegantly stroked Chinese script floods sidewalks and signage (and accompanies the English on street signs), inviting you to stroll the streets and see what local vendors have to offer. Vegetable and seafood markets spill out onto the sidewalk, where grocers literally sing as they invite you to browse their selections.  Storefronts also fill the sidewalk with clothing, electronics, and toys that are unique to the area. The culture doesn’t end on the sidewalks, though, as the interiors of the neighbourhood’s restaurants and shops showcase beautiful Chinese décor.

The corner of Spadina and Dundas St. West wouldn’t look at all out of place in the centre of Hong Kong. Situated right on the corner, Dragon City is a busy mall filled with more restaurants, electronics shops and Asian fashions. Browse for silk dresses or look for rare martial arts DVDs you can’t usually find in North America.

The constant flow of excitement in Chinatown is more than enough reason for celebration, but it gets better. Toronto’s Chinese New Year celebrations rival those of its homeland, and provide more than enough ways to keep you entertained. See the spectacular decorations, the dancing dragons and endless amounts of food that accompany the festivities each year.
