Experience the unexpected riches of East Toronto.

Hop on the bus with your camping gear and travel east to Rouge Park.  Pitch your tent in Glen Rouge Campground, nestled in 12,000 acres of forest and meadows.  Want to find out more about that mysterious bug that woke you up?  Head to the Ontario Science Centre and look it up, or have fun with any of their 600 other exhibits.  To see even more critters, you can’t beat the Toronto Zoo, with over 5,000 animals.  Bond with Budi, the baby orangutan … look into the wild amber eyes of a big cat … or go for a bumpy camel ride.

After all that walking, chill out by the dramatic white sandy contours of the Scarborough Bluffs, 65 metres high – they’re best viewed from Bluffer’s Park off Brimley Road.

Go for a stroll along the Beaches and wander through the unique art galleries and studios.  Who knows what promising young artist you’ll discover?  For a taste of the exotic, the Gerrard India Bazaar at Coxwell and Gerrard offers bargains like an armful of bangles for a toonie.  Treat yourself to some butter chicken washed down with coconut lassi.  Trek north to Eglinton and get down to serious shopping at Merchants Flea Market, with over 250 vendors selling everything from electronics to jewellery to luggage.

Then it’s off to Todmorden Mills, on Pottery Road.  Find out how pioneers braved the winter with a surprisingly tasty winter pantry workshop. Now you’re in the right spirit to travel north to the Zion Schoolhouse which you’ve booked in advance.  Youngsters can dress up in period clothes and experience a day in the life of a schoolchild in 1919 – right down to the stern schoolmaster.

Finish off the day with a relaxed visit to Riverdale Farm, home to friendly sheep, chickens, donkeys and volunteer farmers.  Chat with the farmer during daily chores that include goat milking, horse grooming, and egg collecting.  Finally, eat up tasty treats from a wood-burning oven … yum .. but thank goodness for microwaves.
